I chose these tracks while thinking about my first solo trip to Indonesia. Now that I’m moving to Australia and stopping in Asia along the way, those memories have started returning in a different way. That first journey was the first time I had gone so far on my own. I remember the heat, long roads, boats, unfamiliar mornings and the strange freedom of being somewhere where nobody knew me. Some memories are still very clear, while others have blended into colours, sounds, weather and movement. Most of this music feels like travelling to me, but not in a postcard kind of way. It feels like staring out of a window for hours, arriving somewhere after dark, hearing unfamiliar sounds through an open door, or waking up and needing a moment to remember where I am. The mood moves between calm, curiosity, anticipation and occasional loneliness but never the kind that makes me want to turn back. This time I’m not only taking another trip. I’m leaving one life behind and moving towards another, with Asia somewhere in between. The playlist carries the freedom I discovered on that first journey, but also the uncertainty and excitement of knowing that this one will not end with me returning to the same place.

tracklist

  1. Step Into Time Man Machine Electronic
This feels like the exact point I am in now: still surrounded by what I know, but already mentally somewhere else. The track keeps moving without rushing, which reminds me that this is not just a departure but the beginning of a different life.
  2. Amazonas (The Forests Are Our Future) Placid Angles Techno
  3. East of Nima Richard H. Kirk Electronic
  4. Belong (Echo Space Dub) Spooky Dance
  5. Zamami Plaid Electronic
  6. They Look In, We Look Out B-Zet Dance
  7. Prime Audio Soup (Vegetarian Soup By Boards of Canada) Meat Beat Manifesto Electronic
  8. 1979 (Moby Mix) The Smashing Pumpkins Alternative
  9. Urbi Et Orbi Mappa Mundi Electronic
  10. Vega Libre Secede Electronic
  11. World In Blue Earth Nation Electronic
This gives me the feeling of a horizon where the sky and water begin to disappear into each other. It makes the distance ahead feel enormous, but peaceful rather than frightening.
  12. Les Isles Flottantes Immersion Electronic
  13. Present-Voice Software New Age
  14. Hearts (Reworked) L.S.G. & Oliver Lieb Techno
There is a lot of emotion here, but it never becomes overwhelming. It fits the mixture I feel now: excitement about moving and sadness about everything and everyone that will remain behind.
  15. Breathe Her In Placid Angles Electronic
This carries the freedom I associate with travelling alone. It feels like the moment the pressure of ordinary life falls away and I can breathe differently. It is warm and open, but there is still some uncertainty underneath it.
  16. Aloo Gobi Neotropic Electronic
  17. Plainsong Dub Jah Wobble Rock
  18. Ana Guellile Dub Abdel Ali Slimani Worldwide
  19. On Air Saafi Brothers Electronic
  20. Mystical Experiences The Infinity Project Downtempo
  21. My Kingdom The Future Sound of London Pop
  22. These Waves Young American Primitive Dance
  23. Crusoe Takes a Trip Red Snapper Electronic
  24. Last Train to Lhasa Banco de Gaia Techno
The movement in this track makes distance feel physical, like watching a landscape continue for hours. I chose it because this journey has more weight than a holiday: I am stopping in Asia, but I am moving my life to Australia. It feels like going forward while understanding that something is being left behind.
  25. Mooger Fooger Bermuda Triangle Electronic
