ATA083 with Stamina: a part of me

after the after · 09.10.2026 · all episodes

My first-ever intersection with music happened through the magic of my favorite person: my grandpa, who introduced me to old-school Turkish pop and fantezi through his old records from the ’60s to the ’80s. We used to listen music and paint together and he was always telling me his interesting life stories. Since then, this music has been “a part of me.” In these songs, I hear the saz, bağlama and oud next to violins, bass, drums, and sometimes slightly dramatic sound of organs and keyboards. There are long intros, big melodies, little instrumental breaks, and voices that stretch around the melody. It can feel playful one moment, heavy and emotional the next. I have continued to listen to it throughout every stage of my life, experiencing new depths of emotion with each listen. I believe in the power of its energy and what it brings you after listening. Even if you don’t understand the language, you understand the feelings through the character, fantasy, and drama of this genre. I like to leave the rest to the imagination and emotions of my friends when they listen to these songs for the first time. So, it is “a part of me” that has been there since I knew myself, and a part of my background. Therefore, I wanted to embrace my grandpa and share this playlist with you. P.S. The cover is a collage of my dear grandpa, featuring his own tile artwork of Ottoman women playing the saz, with his depiction of Bosphorus on tile below.
